AIDS defining illness

An AIDS defining illness, according to the CDC surveillance case definition1, is any of the following list of conditions which in the setting of known HIV, confirms the diagnosis of AIDS.
- bacterial infections : multiple or recurrent
- candidiasis : of oesophagus, bronchi, trachea, or lungs
- cervical cancer : invasive
- coccidioidomycosis : disseminated or extrapulmonary
- cryptococcosis : extrapulmonary
- cryptosporidiosis or isosporiasis : chronic intestinal
- cytomegalovirus disease : other than liver, spleen, or nodes
- cytomegalovirus retinitis : with loss of vision
- encephalopathy : HIV related
- herpes simplex: chronic ulcers, bronchitis, pneumonitis, or esophagitis
- histoplasmosis : disseminated or extrapulmonary
- Kaposi sarcoma
- lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) or pulmonary lymphoid hyperplasia complex
- lymphoma : Burkitt , immunoblastic or primary CNS
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex or other species : disseminated or extrapulmonary
- Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia
- pneumonia : recurrent
- progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy
- Salmonella septicaemia : recurrent
- toxoplasmosis
- wasting syndrome of HIV
