Amorphous calcification within breast
Amorphous or indistinct calcifications are a morphological descriptive term for breast calcification and are defined as having 'no clearly defined shape or form'.
These calcifications are usually so small or hazy in appearance, that a more specific morphologic classification cannot be determined.
Pathology
Histology on biopsy
When amorphous calcifications are biopsied they can reveal a range of histologies
- benign : ~ 60 %
- intermediate - high risk lesions : ~ 20%
- malignant : ~ 20%
- low grade ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)
- invasive ductal carcinoma ~ 10 % : usually has an accompanying mass
