Follicular bronchiolitis
Updates to Article Attributes
Follicular bronchiolitis (FB) is usually classified as a pathological sub typesubtype of bronchiolitis.
Pathology
It is defined as lymphoid hyperplasia of the bronchus and is histologically characterised by hyperplastic polyclonal lymphoid follicles with reactive germinal centerscentres principally distributed along bronchioles.
Associations
Many cases of follicular bronchiolitis are associated with various systemic illnesses which include
- collagen vascular diseases / connective tissue diseases 1-2
- immunodeficiency states -
- hypersensitivity reactions
Some cases are idiopathic.
Radiographic features
HRCT chest
A key feature described with follicular bronchiolitis on HRCT includes small centrilobular nodules that are variably associated with peribronchial nodules and regions of ground glass 1.
Other features (albeit non specific-specific) include:
Treatment and prognosis
The overall prognosis will depend on the underlying or associated abnormality. Some case may respond to macrolide antiobioticsantibiotics 6.
