Lesions of the Meckel's cave
There are many lesions that can involve the Meckel's cave.
Tumours
Meckel's cave tumours account for only 0.5% of all intracranial tumours. The most common histologies include:
- trigeminal schwannoma : most common, making up approximately 1/3 of cases
- meningioma
- epidermoid cyst
- lipoma
- metastases : including retrograde spread of head and neck tumours
Non tumourous lesions
These need to be distinguished from Meckel's cave tumours:
- ICA aneurysms / vascular malformation
- pituitary macroadenoma
- base of skull tumours
