The 'lingual tonsils' are aggregations of lymphoid follicles which mediate B and T cell lymphocytes which serve a role in formulating the immune system. They are covered in stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium. 

Location:

  • Posteriorposterior third of dorsum of tongue. 

Blood Supply: 

  • 1. Linguallingual Artery (branch of the external carotid artery) 

  • 2. Tonsillartonsillar branch of the facial artery.

    3. Ascending

  • ascending pharyngeal branch of external carotid artery. 

Nerve Supply: 

1. Tonsillar

  • tonsillar branch of Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
