Seven up coke down
Seven up coke down is a mnemonic to remember the relative position of nerves inside the internal auditory canal (IAC).
Anatomy
Four nerves pass through the IAC
- the facial nerve (VII) and
- the three components of the vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII)
- the cochlear nerve
- the superior vestibular nerve
- the inferior vestibular nerve
Four are the nerves and four are the quadrants of the IAC: antero-superior, antero-inferior, postero-superior, postero-inferior. In each quadrant there is the passage of one nerve. In the posterior quadrants are the two vestibular nerves, while in the anterior quadrants are the other two. Here is where the mnemonic comes useful, infact the seventh nerve, goes up (seven up) and the cochlear nerve goes down (coke down).
