A solitary lucent lesion of the skull is a relatively frequent finding. The differential is heavily influenced by the patient's age.
Older adult /elderly
- metastasis / malignancy
- epidermoid and dermoid
- haemangioma
- intraosseous meningioma
- haemangiopericytoma
- giant cell tumour (GCT)
- Brown tumour (osteitis fibrosa cystica)
- Paget disease of bone (osteoporosis circumscripta)
- osteomyelitis
- normal variant
- surgical defect e.g. burr-hole
Child / young adult
- eosinophilic granuloma / histiocytosis
- epidermoid/dermoid
- fibrous dysplasia
- haemangioma
- metastasis
- normal variant
- growing skull fracture
- meningocoele
- osteomyelitis
