Spinal epidural injection

Epidural spinal injections are one of the more frequently performed spinal interventional procedures.

For equipment and contraindications see spinal interventional procedures.

Three approaches to the epidural space exist:

  1. transforaminal epidural injection
  2. interlaminar epidural injection
  3. caudal epidural injection (via the sacral foramen)

The later two approaches require larger volumes, and higher doses of steroid, with therefore greater likelihood of complication. Transforaminal approach allows small targeted delivery to a smaller region.

Success rate reported in the literature is very variable (23 - 84%)
