Right sided partial retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage

Case contributed by Kehinde Lawal

Presentation

The patient is presenting with right-sided post-traumatic orbital pain.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

A crescent-shaped curvilinear flap is observed at the temporal part of the right eye globe, which is posteriorly attached to the optic nerve head and anteriorly connected with the ora seretta. The linear flap exhibits wavy motion on ocular movements (not demonstrated).

Internal echogenic foci are visible in the vitreous space, indicating mild hemorrhage.

The contralateral left orbit appears intact.

Case Discussion

This is a case of partial retinal detachment, involving the temporal aspect of the right eye.

Such cases are associated with traumatic impact to the eye, typically accompanied with intraocular hemorrhage, as in this case.

The demonstrable wavy nature of the flap and the attachment to the ora seratta and optic nerve differentiate the tear as retinal origin, as opposed to choroidal detachment that is more fixed and convex in appearance.
