Presentation
Persistent knee pain, resistant to therapy
Patient Data
MR Knee
Synovial hyperplasia with the formation of nodules characterized by the accumulation of intracellular hemosiderin, causing a blooming artifact on GRE T2. There are large erosions of the medial tibial plate and femoral condyle.
Case Discussion
MRI shows the extent of the disease and the signal is hypointense on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences.
On the gradient-recalled echo T2 sequences, a pathognomonic sign of this pathology is the blooming artifact, caused by magnetic susceptibility from intracellular hemosiderin deposits.
