Ankle fracture - Weber B

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Adult patient fell and twisted ankle.

Patient Data

Age: Adult
Gender: Male
x-ray

Spiral fracture through the distal fibula. Fracture line through the ankle joint in keeping with a Weber B, with slight lateral talar shift (widening of medial clear space).

Well-corticated ossicle distal to the medial malleolus may be post-traumatic or congenital (i.e. an accessory ossicle).

x-ray

Plate and screw internal fixation of distal fibular fracture. Lateral talar shift has been reduced with reduction of the fibula - distal syndesmosis must have been obviously stable at surgery and thus no diastasis screw was used.

Case Discussion

Just a standard Weber B. Remember that it is the medial height of the fracture that counts.
