The arcuate foramen is an anatomic variant that is thought to arise from the ossification of the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane.

Vertebral It can be associated with vertebral artery segment could be entrapped in the foramen and cause vertebrobasilar ischaemia which could lead tocompression, vertigo, headache, or and neck pain.
