There is a symmetrical band of heterotypic cortex within the posterior aspect of both cerebral hemispheres. The overlying cortex appears macroscopically normal.

Case Discussion

Band heterotopia is a condition almost exclusively seen in females. It is linked to the DCX and LIS1 genes and can be seen in association with lissencephaly. This posterior distribution was confirmed to be a LIS1 genetic mutation. This is a relatively subtle example but highlights the importance of high resolution imaging and the inversion recovery sequence to assess for such abnormalities of cortical migration.
