Basal ganglia calcification

Case Discussion:

Adult male with acute infarction.

Dentate nuclei are also involved.

Tips for basal ganglia calcification:

1. Sometimes called physiological Ca++.

2. May be familial [AD or AR].

3. May be idiopathic.

4. Other etiologies: hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism  ,hyperparathyroidism and Fahr's syndrome.

5. Current terminology is pseudocalcifications.

6. Bilateral and symmetric.

7. Iron may be deposited along with Ca++.

8. Not signifying certain disease.

9. Associated with dentate nuclei Ca++.
