Bifid rib

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Right anterior chest wall bump with pain - 6 weeks. Clinical examination reveals a bump at 3rd costochondral junction. Referred for local USG and / or chest radiograph.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male

3rd rib appears to be much wider than 2nd rib. 3rd rib anterior end shows division of bony part  which continue to be costal cartilage. Two cartilage fuse with one other and then attach to  sternum.

Though ultrasound gave clear idea about bifid rib, chest AP supine radiograph for ribs was done for two reasons.

1 ) to rule intramedullary bony lesion in rib.

2 ) to get more ' conventional '  way of documenting abnormal of interest.
