Cavernous transformation of the right portal vein branch

Presentation:

Patient with known thrombosis of the right intrahepatic portal vein branch, referred for MRI of the liver to rule out hepatocellular carcinoma.

Patient Data:

Age: 59
Gender: Female
Race: Caucasian

Case Discussion:

The right portal vein branch is filled by an organised thrombus with only minimal re-canalisation and surrounded by multiple small tortuous vessels (Fig. 1).  On MRA (Fig. 2), the right portal branch is not visualised.
