Cervical incompetence

Presentation:

Premature labour pain, with some non-specific vaginal discharge

Patient Data:

Age: 26 weeks gestation
Gender: Female
Race: Other
Modality: Ultrasound

Markedly gaping internal os is seen with 'U-shaped' funneling of gestation sac and bulging amniotic membranes. Near-total effacement of cervix is seen.

Case Discussion:

Cervical incompetence is a painless spontaneous dilatation of the cervix, and is a common cause of second trimester pregnancy failure.
