Pituitary region MRI demonstrates a suprasellar mass which is predominantly cystic with a small enhancing posterosuperior nodule. The mass elevates and distorts the optic chiasm but does not extend into the pituitary fossa.
Case Discussion
Features are consistent with a papillary craniopharyngioma which was confirmed histologically.
Histology:
Sections show a papillary tumor with a fibrovascular core covered by a multilayered collection of well-differentiated epithelial cells. The basal layer of cells show a degree of nuclear palisading and there are focal areas with a loose, microcystic pattern. There is no obvious keratin formation.
Final diagnosis: Suprasellar nodule; papillary craniopharyngioma.
