Ectopic eruption of maxillary molar tooth (wisdom tooth)

Case contributed by: Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Presentation:

26 year old male with suffering recurrent headeache. CT scans for face sinus and brain was requested. Normal brain CT. CT images show the third molar (wisdom tooth) tooth projecting into the right maxillary sinus.

Scout shows a well-defined opacity in the maxillary sinus projection.

Axial CT shows the third molar tooth in the projecting into the right maxillary sinus.

Case Discussion:

Ectopic eruption of teeth into regions other than the oral cavity is rare although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process and the palate.

Occasionally, a tooth may erupt into the maxillary antrum and present
with local sinonasal symptoms attributed to recurrent or chronic sinusitis.

The diagnosis of this condition can easily be made radiologically with plain sinus X-rays.
