Feeling lump in the anterior neck

Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Female
ct
  • no thyroid tissue noted at the expected position of normal thyroid bed

  • however; there is well-defined round, homogeneously enhancing ectopic thyroid tissue seen at the base of the tongue

  • bilateral reactive cervical lymphadenopathy

Case Discussion

Ectopic thyroid gland is when the thyroid gland is found in a location other than the normal position

A lingual thyroid is a special type of ectopic thyroid and results from the lack of normal caudal migration of the thyroid gland.
