Case contributed by Praveen Jha
Diagnosis probable

For first trimester morphology scan (Nuchal translucency scan) at 12-13 weeks of gestation.

Patient Data

Age: 3 months gestational age
ultrasound

Approx. 12 weeks 1 day fetus with markedly elongated enlarged urinary bladder, with craniocaudal dimension of approx. 26 mm. Urinary bladder is reaching upto the diaphragm.

Case Discussion

Fetal megacystis is relatively rare condition, however associated with multiple chromosomal anomalies and also has syndromic associations.

Amniocentesis is advised in this case, to assess chromosomal anomalies. Although, with bladder dimension of >15 mm, in spite of absence of chromosomal anomalies, progressive obstructive uropathy needs to be considered.
