Foreign body induced synovitis of 1st metatarso-phalangeal joint.

Presentation

Thorn injury to great toe - 1 mth. C/o local swelling. Referred for Ultrasound to rule out / localize foreign body.

Patient Data

Age: about 20 yrs
Gender: Male

4 - 5 mm sized linear echogenic focus ( foreign body - thorn ) is seen embedded in thickened synovium of 1st metatarso-phalangeal joint. It is on dorsal aspect.  Synovial hypervascularity is noted.

No tenosynovitis / tendon tear.

 

 

Case Discussion

Findings favor foreign body ( thorn  ) induced synovitis of joint.

Surgery  - Foreign body at site mentioned by ultrasound - embedded in thickened synovium. Fluid in joint contained pus flakes.
