Case Discussion
It can be distinguished from omphalocele because the latter would come through the umbilicus and also usually be smaller.
In approximately 14% of cases, gastroschisis is misdiagnosed as an omphalocele. This results in an unnecessary amniocentesis (as associated congenital abnormalities are more common with an omphalocele and raised AFP would be an indication for amniocentesis).
