  • incomplete fracture of the mid-shaft of tibia

  • callus formation noted on its postero-lateral aspect

Case Discussion

Greenstick fracture with callus formation

  • incomplete fracture ie. fracture line does not extend through entire width of bone

  • cortical breach is noted on one side only

  • in children the bones are more pliable hence they are prone to such fractures

  • If the bending bone is angulated slightly beyond it's limit of bending, there is complete failure of the convex cortex (the side of maximal tension) and only bending on the compression side

  • Greenstick fractures tend to be mid-shaft injuries and may result from direct perpendicular trauma
