Inevitable miscarriage

Case contributed by Alexandra Stanislavsky
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Abdominal cramps and per vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

The cervix is open, and a 9 week old fetus is seen within the lower uterine segment.  There was no fetal cardiac activity (cardiac trace not shown).

Case Discussion

Selected views of the lower uterine segment demonstrate a miscarriage in progress at the level of the cervix (inevitable miscarriage).  An important differential to exclude is a cervical ectopic, and in some cases serial ultrasound and beta hCG followup may be necessary.
