Left atrial thrombus

Case contributed by: Dr Jeremy Jones

Presentation:

Increasing shortness of breath with pleuritic chest pain.

Patient Data:

Age: 68
Gender: Female
Race: Caucasian
Modality: CT

The CT demonstrates a large soft tissue density within the left atrium.  Further smaller mass within the left ventricle. Bilateral pleural effusions and a hiatus hernia.

Case Discussion:

The differential is between atrial myxoma and atrial thrombus; the latter is more likely here since there is a second ventricular mass and no septal attachment.
