Neck abscess in an IVDU

Presentation

Recent attempt at venous access in the right neck for illicit drug use. Now pain, swelling and fever.

Patient Data

Age: 20
Gender: Female

Swelling of the right sternomastoid is associated with a ring enhancing mass indicative of abscess. Edema in overlying fat. Note right jugular lymph node chain enlargement. The abscess sits immediately superficial to the internal jugular vein. The vein remains patent.
