Ovarian hernia

Case contributed by Dr Lee-Anne Slater

Patient's mother noticed a lump in the left groin when changing her nappy.

Patient Data:

Age: 4 weeks
Gender: Female
Modality: Ultrasound

US shows a structure with follicles consistent with an ovary sitting on the anterior abdominal wall in the first image. In the second image the ovary is seen to partially return into the abdomen. The third image confirms presence of intact vascular supply.

Case Discussion:

Findings are in keeping with an ovarian inguinal hernia (canal of Nuck hernia). These hernias are at risk of incarceration with subsequent compromise to the vascular supply of the ovary.
