Paget-Schroetter syndrome

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

Presentation:

Diffuse pain and oedema of the right arm and shoulder after physical exertion.

Patient Data:

Age: 35
Gender: Female
Race: Caucasian
Modality: MRI

Signal void in the right axillary and subclavian vein caused by a clot. Extensive collateral circulation on MR venography. Hypertrophic anterior scalenus muscle.

Case Discussion:

Paget-Schrötter syndrome, also called effort-induced thrombosis, designates axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis in otherwise healthy individuals. The aetiology is multifactorial, but extrinsic compression of the subclavian vein between the clavicle and the first rib seems to play a decisive role1.
