Radial neck and olecranon fractures

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones

Presentation

Fall off bike with elbow injury.

Oblique radial neck fracture with minimal displacement. Subtle olecranon fracture.

Case Discussion

Elbow injuries are common in children and radial neck fractures make up a reasonable number of them. It is important to determine whether the radial head remains in joint (it does in this case) and it is also important to exclude other injuries.

In this case, as well as the radial neck fracture, there is an oblique fracture through the olecranon (which was initially missed, but confirmed at follow up when callus formation had commenced).
