Round atelectasis

Case contributed by Bruno Di Muzio
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Patient in late follow-up for colonic cancer, asymptomatic.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

CT Chest

ct

Nodular opacity in the basal lung segments of the left lower lobe. It is circumscribed, regular, adjacent to a pleural surface, retracting the bronchial segments to the lower lobe, as well as reducing the volume of the respective lobe.

Case Discussion

The findings favored round atelectasis, which is an unusual type of atelectasis where there is infolding of a redundant pleura. The way the lung collapses can at times give a false mass-like appearance.
