Case Discussion

The circumferential constriction in the distal esophagus is compatible with a fixed B-ring with a caliber <13 mm. Since it produces some degree of dysphagia and chest pain secondary to food impaction, it is termed a Schatzki ring.

It is common to see a sliding hiatal hernia associated with these rings and both are associated with peptic esophagitis and peptic strictures.

The treatment is surgical, since the expansions are not usually effective.
