Small bowel obstruction due to femoral hernia

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Intestinal obstruction symptoms.

Patient Data:

Age: 73
Gender: Female

CT Abdomen and pelvis

Modality: CT

Spiral CT shows small bowel obstruction due right femoral hernia. Distal small bowel (ileum) and colon are in normal aspect.

Case Discussion:

One complication of femoral hernia is small bowel obstruction. Femoral hernias typically occur in women and unlike inguinal hernias, the hernia sac remain lateral to the pubic tubercle. Also femoral hernias always compress the femoral vein (as seen in this case) while it is rare for inguinal hernias to compress the femoral vein.
