Sternal fracture

Presentation

Anterior chest wall trauma. Complaining of local pain. Ultrasound to check for sternal fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

At the site of pain pointed to by the patient, there is an anterior cortical breach in the sternal body. There is no local hematoma abutting it. Adjacent subcutaneous fat is echogenic, favoring fat contusion.

Case Discussion

Ultrasound is effective for diagnosis of sternal fracture as in this case. However, only anterior cortex of sternum is seen with ultrasound.
