Presentation

Acute onset of right-sided temporomandibular joint pain, clicking and dysfunction.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

There is anterior disc displacement on the symptomatic right-hand side. The disc appears anteriorly displaced on closed mouth view and reduces and recaptures on the open mouth. No evidence of posterior disc displacement, and no features to suggest a stuck disc on the symptomatic right-hand side.

The left-sided disc appears normal and satisfactorily sited on open and closed-mouth views.

Multiplanar MR imaging of the temporomandibular joints is otherwise normal.

Case Discussion

Multiparametric temporomandibular joint functional MRI confirms right anterior disc displacement on the closed mouth views with reduction and recapture on the open mouth views. The left temporomandibular disc is normal on functional MR imaging.
