Tibia fracture (importance of 2 views)

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Fall off skateboard. Failing to weight bear appropriately.

Patient Data

Age: 8
Gender: Male

Oblique distal-diaphyseal tibial fracture. It is virtually impossible to see on the AP view even retrospectively.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates why we always review two views (hopefully orthogonal views) when looking for a fracture; the AP film fails to demonstrate the tibial fracture that is clearly evident on the lateral.

The tibial fracture is oblique, minimally displaced and does not involve the physis.
