Workplace accident. Pulled into machinery.

Patient Data

Age: 35-40 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Normal supine thoracolumbar spine radiographs with gentle lumbar scoliosis concave to the right. Amputation of an arm at the level of the mid-distal humerus is visible on the lateral image.

Image of the traumatically amputated left arm with displaced fractures of the radius and ulnar shafts. 

Case Discussion

Unexpected (well it was for the reporting radiologist at least) finding of traumatic arm amputation on a lateral trauma thoracic spine radiograph. Unfortunately attempts to re-attach the arm were unsuccessful.
