Widened fontanelles

Case contributed by: Dr Frank Gaillard

Presentation:

Enlarged head circumference.

Patient Data:

Age: Infant
Modality: CT

Case Discussion:

Infant with marked dilatation of the trigones of the lateral ventricles (colpocephaly) has widened fontanelles. Unfortunately the rest of the images are not available, and the cause of the abnormality is not known.

It is important to remember that prior to fusion of the sutures, changes in ventricular size or brain parenchyma result in changes in head circumference rather (to a much greater extent than in those with fused skulls) than rises in intracranial pressure.
