Blade plate

Last revised by Brian Gilcrease-Garcia on 29 Dec 2018

Blade plates, also known as angled blade plates, are a type of orthopedic hardware used for reconstructing subtrochanteric femoral fractures, including therapeutic fractures during derotational osteotomies.

Blade plates were an advance on earlier fixation nails such as the Y nail or the Zicker nail. Although they continue to be used, in many centers they have been superseded by more advanced intramedullary nail designs. Some consider blade plates to be relatively technically demanding to place, but with good outcomes in experienced hands 2.

Blade plates may also be used to reconstruct tibial fractures.
