Benign lytic bone lesions encompass a wide variety of entities.  A useful starting point is the FEGNOMASHIC mnemonic.

The differential diagnosis for benign lytic bone lesions includes:

• non-ossifying fibroma (NOF)

• osteoblastoma

• aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC)

• simple bone cyst (SBC)

• brown tumor (hyperparathyroidism)

• intraosseous hemangioma

• intraosseous lipoma

• infection

  • Brodie abscess

  • intraosseous hydatid cyst

• chondromyxoid fibroma

• ameloblastoma
