Proximal iliotibial band syndrome

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 17 Feb 2023

Proximal iliotibial band syndrome represents a strain injury of the proximal iliotibial band enthesis at the iliac tubercle.

Usually presents in young athletes (although can present in non-athletes). There may be increased predilection in patients who are overweight 2.

There may be slightly greater female predilection due to wider pelvic girdle and shorter femur as compared with males 5.

May demonstrate thickening and hypo-echogenicity of the iliotibial band origin 5.

  • T2: often shows increased signal at the iliotibial band enthesis along the lower border of the iliac tubercle
