Last revised by Bahman Rasuli on 28 Dec 2021

The accessory extensor digiti secundus muscle is a rare accessory muscle or tendon of the ankle and an anatomical variant.

  • origin: extensor hallucis longus tendon or muscle
  • insertion: medial phalanx of the second toe adjacent to the second tendon of the extensor digitorum longus muscle
  • innervation: deep peroneal nerve

The accessory extensor digiti secundus muscle originates from the extensor hallucis longus tendon or muscle and travels between the extensor hallucis longus and the extensor digitorum longus muscles in the anterior compartment to the second toe inserting onto medial phalanx blending with the second tendon of the extensor digitorum longus 1,2.

The accessory extensor digiti secundus muscle was first reported by the Turkish anatomists Murat Tezer and Aynur Emine Cicekbasi in 2011 1-3.
