Anterior fibulocalcaneus muscle

Last revised by Joachim Feger on 28 Dec 2021

The anterior fibulocalcaneus muscle is a rare accessory muscle of the ankle and an anatomical variant.

The anterior fibulocalcaneus muscle originates from the proximal fibula and the peroneus tertius muscle and travels parallel to the peroneus and extensor tendons anterior to the lateral malleolus to insert at the lateral calcaneus anterosuperior to the fibular trochlea (peroneal tubercle) 1-3

The anterior fibulocalcaneus muscle was first described by the American anatomist H Wayne Lambert and Stavros Atsas in 2010 1.

The anterior fibulocalcaneus muscle might be mistaken for pathology or the peroneus tertius muscle. It also serves as a potential harvest site for a tendon graft.
