Autoimmune thyroiditis (plural: thyroiditides) (AIT) refers to a group of conditions in which there is inflammation of the thyroid gland secondary to thyroid autoantibodies.
Epidemiology
They are the most common thyroid disease group in the pediatric population 5.
Pathology
Entities that fall under this category include:
- Graves disease
- Hashimoto thyroiditis
- primary idiopathic hypothyroidism with thyroid atrophy (some consider same spectrum as Hashimoto thyroiditis)
- Riedel thyroiditis
- silent thyroiditis 7
- postpartum thyroiditis 7
