Bartholin gland abscess

Bartholin gland abscess (maybe shortened to Bartholin abscess) is a complication that may result from an infected Bartholin gland cyst

Radiographic features

Abscesses are usually in a similar location to Bartholin gland cysts. Features of Bartholin gland abscess are otherwise similar to Bartholin gland cyst described in separate article.


Signal characteristics include:

  • T2: tends to show heterogeneous signal 1
  • T1 C+ (Gd): pericystic enhancement may be present 1

History and etymology

The Bartholin glands are named after the Danish anatomist Caspar Bartholin the Younger (1655-1738), who made the first detailed study of their physiology and anatomy in humans 3.
