Basle Nomina Anatomica

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 24 Aug 2020

The Basle Nomina Anatomica (BNA) (a.k.a. Basiliensia Nomina Anatomica) is one of several anatomical nomenclature standards no longer in use 1-3. The Basle Nomina Anatomica was published in 1895 in Switzerland 1, but not adopted without controversy or uniformly even in neighbouring countries 2. The Basle Nomina Anatomica was an attempt to create a standardised lexicon out of many different anatomic terminology systems, and therefore reduced the number of anatomical terms, as redundant terms were removed. The Basle Nomina Anatomica was replaced by the Nomina Anatomica in 1955.
