Cameron lesions

Last revised by Calum Worsley on 30 Nov 2021

Cameron lesions refer to linear ulcers or erosions that occur on the mucosal folds at the diaphragmatic impression of a hiatus hernia. They are usually radiographically occult and diagnosed endoscopically (although still useful for a radiologist to know).

Epidemiology

Their prevalence has been reported in up to 5% of patients with a hiatus hernia who undergo esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

Clinical presentation

They can be associated with overt gastrointestinal bleeding or anemia

Pathology

They are thought to occur due to vascular compression by the diaphragm from a large sliding hiatus hernia.

Location

They mostly tend to be located at the neck of a hiatus hernia.
