Cardiac restraint device

Cardiac restraint devices are implantable cardiac devices which aim to reduce ventricular wall stress, improve systolic function and reduce cardiac remodeling.

Cardiac restraint devices act to support the ventricular wall with an elastic mesh network which offers passive pressure to support the ventricular wall 1. It is inserted through a mini-thoracotomy. Studies have shown such devices successfully reduce cardiac remodeling and improve systolic function and the symptoms of heart failure but do not offer a survival benefit 2,3.

The HeartNetTM device was the most popular type of cardiac restraint device, however, it has been discontinued 1.

Radiographic features

The HeartNetTM device is visible on chest radiograph as a radiopaque mesh-like net that follows the cardiac contour 1.
