Cerebellar tonsils

Last revised by Craig Hacking on 3 Sep 2020

The cerebellar tonsils are ovoid structures on the inferomedial surface of each cerebellar hemisphere. They are attached to the underlying cerebellum by the tonsillar peduncle 1-4.

  • medial: uvula of the vermis
  • superior: flocculonodular lobe
  • anterior: posterior surface of the medulla and the cerebellomedullary fissure
  • posteroinferior: cisterna magna

Arterial blood supply to the cerebellar tonsils is through an anastomosis of branches from the anterior inferior cerebellar and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries 3,4.
