Cheerio sign (shoulder)

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 27 Apr 2020

The Cheerio sign has been described as a sign seen in a type III superior labral anterior posterior tear (SLAP lesion) of the glenoid labrum. In the Cheerio sign, a rounded core of soft tissue is surrounded by a rim of contrast material and gas.

SLAP type III is the bucket handle tear of the superior labrum without an involvement of biceps tendon. On CT arthrography, the anterior labrum folds, with contrast material and gas surrounding it, give it an appearance similar to a 'Cheerio' (oat and wheat flour breakfast cereal in the shape of a doughnut).
